CAN I PLAY A YOUKAI CHARACTER?
You most certainly can! youkai are really common in Nazo, even if no one actually believes all the weird rumors. Just keep in mind that any youkai who do manage to make it to the human world will have their power halved and most are invisible to normal humans, barring those who can take on human form. Youkai may also be the perpetrators of crimes, but keep in mind that the Yamazaki family has a no-tolerance policy when it comes to youkai. One mistake and it's back to the spirit world they go. Youkai may also be in any member group.
WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE YAMAZAKI FAMILY?
The Yamazaki family is the oldest, most powerful family in Nazo. On the outside they're simply the owners of the Yamazaki Shrine, but they're actually a powerful family of exorcists meant to keep the youkai population in Nazo under control. They don't appreciate people trespassing in their shrine, as there are many dangerous things within it. There are many branches of the family, so some characters may find themselves distantly related. The main branch of the family is lead by Yamazaki Ai, the head of the family. Her husband passed away twenty years ago and she has five children, the eldest of whom is in their late twenties-early thirties and the youngest of whom is in their early teens. The children are able to be played by members, but Yamazaki Ai is an NPC.
CAN I PLAY A CRIMINAL?
At the moment, criminals are unable to be played. Because of their nature, most are one-shot characters who are punished after being caught for their crimes. As the plot progresses, spots may open up for members to play criminals who are part of a bigger deal. Of course, this doesn't mean your character can't have a criminal history or be bad or may even be a fledgling criminal, but they won't have any bearing on cases.
CAN I HAVE A DETECTIVE / DETECTIVE AGENCY THAT SPECIALIZES IN PARANORMAL EVENTS CAUSED BY YOUKAI?
Yes you absolutely can! They won't be common by far, and will be watched almost constantly by the Yamazaki family, but they are very much allowed! This also includes independent exorcists not affiliated with the Yamazaki family.
DO CHARACTERS HAVE TO BE JAPANESE / JAPAN NATIVES?
They do not. Feel free to have your character be any ethnicity you want them to be, just keep in mind that people might not be too happy with foreigners encroaching on their town if they think they feel any hostility, etc, etc.
